General William D. McCain Scholarship Award

Essay Contest Rules and Guidelines

Who May Quality? Any 11^th or 12^th grad High School student who is currently an Arkansas resident and who is presently attending a public, private, or home school in Arkansas. Entrant must have been a resident for at least one year.

Length and format of essay: Minimum of 1,000 words, typed and double-spaced on plain white 8 ½” x 11” typing paper. Historic content is the primary consideration for judging the essays. The essay must include an outline, and be appropriately footnoted to document your sources of information.

Deadline for Submittal: All essays must be submitted to the local SCV Camp for judging not later than March 1. (Current Arkansas Division Year.)

Award Presentation Date: The winner will be notified by mail by the Arkansas Division Commander and or Camp Commander. The location and date of the presentation will be included in this notification. The Camp Commander of the sponsoring camp will make the presentation of the scholarship award.

Subject of Essay: Any topic of Southern History in the United States between May 14, 1607 (founding of Jamestown, Virginia) to the end of World War II (September 1945).

Title of Essay: To be selected by the entrant. Some past examples included: “George Washington Carver Scientist from the Ozarks”; “My Favorite General from Arkansas”; “Arkansas’s Role in World War I”; “The Flood of 1927”. Your choice of title is unrestricted.

Amount of Award: $500 award to be presented by check from the Arkansas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Returned Essays: Submitted essays will not be returned and become the property of the Arkansas Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Application: An application form must be included with the submitted essay. You may obtain an application form from your local SCV Camp.
